Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
